While in the tiny town of Dingle, I spent much of my free time (when not at the pub) in the library, reading through Doyle's books: The Commitments, The Snapper, and The Van. Barrytown Trilogy I first discovered this jewel of comedy writing while studying abroad in Ireland. "The Last Roundup" is an ambitious trilogy, much more complex and interesting than the three Barrytown novels -- "The Commitments," "The Snapper" and "The Van" -- for which he is better known in the U.S. My professor gave us an excerpt from The Snapper to read for class, which I immediately ate up. 'Barrytown Trilogy: The Commitments, The Snapper & The Van', by Roddy Doyle. This is probably Roddy Doyle's best known work and it captures perfectly Dublin in the late eighties and early nineties. The Snapper is book two of the Barrytown trilogy, which also includes "The Commitments" (yes, it was made into a movie), and "The Van". The trilogy follows one working-class Irish family. In the novels, The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van, Roddy Doyle shows his support of the family as an institution.
